Enabling Multilingual Accessibility for Information KIOSKs Across India
About the Client
The client operates in the retail and public service sector, delivering self-service Information KIOSK solutions deployed across multiple regions in India. These kiosks are designed to serve a highly diverse population, making multilingual accessibility essential for effective public interaction. The client collaborates with multiple kiosk hardware and software vendors, each using different operating systems, rendering mechanisms, and proprietary architectures. To ensure inclusivity and consistency in user experience, the client needed a reliable multilingual solution that could be implemented without disrupting existing kiosk applications.
Client Requirements
The client’s primary objective was to enable seamless multilingual display across Information KIOSK applications to enhance accessibility, usability, and customer satisfaction.
Their key requirements included:
- Real-time translation of display content without significant application changes
- Compatibility with kiosks using different operating systems and vendor-specific architectures
- Support for on-device processing and offline environments
- Flexible integration options to support current and future kiosk vendors
- High translation accuracy to maintain clarity and trust in public-facing information
- The solution needed to be scalable, secure, and capable of operating efficiently across geographically distributed deployments.
Project Details
Technologies & Tools:
- JSON-based Web APIs
- Windows- and Android-compatible components
- Secure cloud, LAN, and on-premise deployment models
Challenges
During the implementation, LinguaSol identified several technical challenges:

Proprietary Rendering Methods
Many kiosks used custom or proprietary UI rendering techniques, limiting access to application code and preventing standard localization approaches.

Heterogeneous Vendor Ecosystem
The presence of multiple vendors with varying operating systems and hardware configurations made it difficult to adopt a single tightly coupled integration strategy.

System-Level Translation Needs
Since direct application modification was not always possible, translation functionality had to be introduced at a system or middleware level without impacting kiosk performance.

Offline and Secure Environments
Several kiosk deployments operated in restricted or offline networks, requiring a secure translation solution that could function without continuous internet connectivity.
Solutions
After evaluating the kiosk landscape and technical constraints, LinguaSol proposed a flexible integration strategy, recommending Approach V3: Vendor-Supported Integration via Web APIs, while remaining adaptable to the client’s final decision.
Recommended Solution: V3 – Web API-Based Integration
LinguaSol designed a standardized JSON Web API framework capable of receiving text strings, source and target language parameters, and security tokens.
The APIs could be deployed in cloud, LAN, or fully on-premise environments, ensuring suitability for both online and offline kiosks.
This approach allowed translation to be externalized from kiosk applications, enabling consistent multilingual support across diverse vendor platforms.
Comprehensive documentation ensured easy integration and future scalability.
Final Implementation: V1 (Client-Selected)
After internal evaluation, the client finalized Approach V1 for supported vendors. LinguaSol successfully delivered this solution, enabling tighter control over translation workflows and display behavior, while ensuring high accuracy and performance.
Results
The engagement delivered strong outcomes for the client:
Multilingual Enablement:
Information KIOSKs were enhanced with accurate multilingual display across five Indian languages, significantly improving accessibility for regional users.
Seamless Integration:
The V1 solution enabled smooth integration for supported vendors without disrupting existing applications.
Improved Translation Accuracy:
Fine-grained control over translations reduced errors and improved clarity in public-facing information.
Scalable Architecture:
The solution framework allows easy expansion to additional languages and kiosk vendors.
Enhanced User Experience:
End users benefited from intuitive, language-friendly self-service interfaces, increasing engagement and satisfaction.
